Jessica’s Blood Test: Is Veganism Healthy?

Me with a beautiful rescue pig at Animal Acres

I’ve been dreading this doctor’s visit for a while. I know my vegan diet drastically reduces my risk of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and type 2 diabetes, but I also know most Americans think consumption of animal proteins is necessary for adequate intake of protein, iron, B12, and other vital nutrients. My Mom (who is now vegan, but is still neurotically obsessed with my health) talked me into getting a full blood test to make sure I’m doing alright. While I eat relatively healthy, I’m not obsessive about supplements or vitamins, so I had no idea what to expect.

My doctor ran a bunch of tests, but the highlights are below.

Spoiler alert: I’m disgustingly healthy.

In conclusion, while it’s very important to pay attention to nutrition (and I promise to do a better job), even if you don’t, a standard vegan diet can provide an exceptionally healthy amount of nutrients and saves you from a multitude of devastating and crippling diseases.

Also, you don’t have to unnecessarily murder any animals, and that’s nice too.

“What would happen if you didn’t eat a turkey for Thanksgiving? Would you lose your college loan or your job? Would your family stop loving you? Would you get sick and die?

What really matters in your life? Are you treating all inhabitants of this earth with compassion or are you succumbing to cultural norms? Are you a leader or a follower? Do you think for yourself to determine right from wrong? Are you treating animals the way you want to be treated?

You are what you do, not what you say. Who are you?”

Alright compassionate ladies & gents- it’s protest time.  INTERMIX has pissed off the wrong vegans.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 5- we’ll be spending the afternoon protesting the Los Angeles INTERMIX while educating passers by about the horrors of the fur industry.  Amy (of La Belle Nuage) & I will be coordinating the LA protest, and we absolutely encourage animal lovers & activists nationwide to protest your local INTERMIX on the same day.  We’re happy to help you out in any way we can- and please keep us in the loop!
NO ONE deserves to suffer & die for fashion. RSVP HERE (and if you can’t make it, please show your support by signing our PETITION!)

Ask INTERMIX to stop selling cruelty.

As you may have gathered from my last post, I’m obsessed with fall fashion.  Sadly, while I love the effects the change of seasons has on my wardrobe, the arrival of autumn also brings out the ugliest side of the fashion industry: fur.  Last year I was absolutely ecstatic when, largely thanks to the effort & pressure put forth by YOU all, a company called Nasty Gal pledged to remove fur from their collection.  I checked back in this season and was thrilled to see they’ve kept their promise.  This transformation is proof that when the public speaks, the industry listens.

I’d love to harness your passion once again as I join my friend Amy (over at La Belle Nuage) in a campaign to get fur out of Intermix stores.  Intermix is a much larger target than Nasty Gal and may require some patience, but I truly believe in the power of compassionate energy to open eyes & change hearts.  Please take a minute to send an email, tweet, and/or facebook message to them and encourage them to make compassion the fashion this year by removing fur from their stores and site!  You don’t even have to “like” their facebook page to post, so I highly encourage leaving messages, photos, & videos for them to see.  I suspect some posts may be deleted, but if we keep them coming in large numbers, they can’t ignore us forever.

are NOT worth this:

Thanks in advance!  Please keep me posted.
